Insight: Workers' Compensation Reform / Safe Ground / Olive Oil / Jeff Alkire

Published September 19, 2012

Workers Compensation Reform - Governor Jerry Brown signed a widely supported bill Tuesday that many believe will change California's workers' compensation law to better protect small business owners and injured workers. The changes are also expected to save California businesses $1 billion next year. But opponents of the workers' compensation reform say the Governor and lawmakers' characterization of the changes as good-for-all-sides is wrong and business is being favored over injured workers. We'll speak with Christine Baker, Director of California's Department of Industrial Relations, and Brad Chalk, Legislative Chair for California Applicants' Attorneys Association.

Safe Ground - Safe Ground's failed attempt to establish a city-sanctioned homeless campground to shelter some of the 1,200 homeless men, women, and children living on area streets and along the American River is evolving into a new solution. The organization of advocates for a homeless-run community is now proposing a village of small wooden homes and will be exhibiting a prototype of the proposed dwelling in Cesar Chavez Plaza Wednesday.

Olive Oil - Did you know that UC Davis has an "Olive Center?" And based on recent studies, researchers from the center say restaurant and food service providers should improve their quality-control protocols for olive oil - specifically for sensory standards. Executive Director Dan Flynn will bring us an olive oil taste test, discuss the research and the 5 myths about olive oil.

Jeff Alkire - September's Final Friday at Beatnik Studios features world class jazz with alto saxist Jeff Alkire and members of the Capital Jazz project. Jeff visits our studio to share some favorite tracks from "Song Byrds Like To Fly" and "All the Things You Are". The Beatnik's Co-owner, Lindsey Calmettes also talks about "Final Fridays" becoming the soiree place to be for quality art and music, plus food trucks, and worthwhile non-profits running the wine and beer bar.
